The town of Blacksburg was established in the mid-1700 on a plateau which rises near a summit in the Appalachian mountains. The presence of the surrounding mountains enhances Blacksburg's identity as a refreshingly scenic rural town.
Containing a major university, corporate research center and industrial park, Blacksburg offers the urban amenities most desired by citizens, newcomers and visitors. It is the home of Virginia Tech, several industries and the nationally acclaimed Blacksburg Electronic Village.
On January 13, 1798 Blacksburg was officially named and established on 39 acres in the form of 16 squares. Two hundred years later the town has grown to encompass 18,8 square miles with a population of approximately 35 000. Visitors can discover the blend of the past with the present as Blacksburg celebrates being a special place for 200 years.
