An engineer by profession, Sri SOUMEN BHATTACHARYYA has been playing Classical Indian music on the Sitar from an early age also. He has had extensive guidance on the Sitar from Sri Partha Chatterjee, worthy disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and the Late Pandit Nikhil Banerjee. Soumen Bhattacharyya, a prominent constellation in the scene of Indian Classical Music, is an exponent of the MAIHAR GHARANA. After years of arduous sadhna and training, Soumen has emerged a consummate artiste, winning accolades as a brilliant performer from the connoisseurs of music. A very valuable feature in Soumen's music is the completeness of execution in every aspect of his performance. His deep and austere commitment to his art and his sheer joy in his creative relation with his music is apparent in each and every one of his performances and his Sitar recitals have been highly acclaimed in most of the major cities of India. Soumen’s Sitar skills have also carried him beyond the borders of India to Nepal, the South East Asian countries like Indonesia and Singapore and on to Japan. In the spring and summer of 1990, Soumen completed a successful tour of the Alpine countries of Europe and his tour of California, USA, in the summer of 1995 and fall of 1996,1997,1998 and 2002 has earned for him offers of encores to be performed in 2003.
